Abstract:

The article is devoted to the description and analysis of the first experience of organizing mass distance learning gained by Russian and foreign educational institutions in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study reveal that pedagogical support of students in a distance format has its own characteristics, the necessary conditions for efficiency, main disadvantages and ample opportunities, during which teachers perform not the role of a mentor, but rather the role of a mentor and tutor. The authors point out the crucial challenges facing teachers and majority of students, especially such a vulnerable category as foreign students who confront the impossibility to return home, poor access to health care, migration and visa problems, etc. Analysis of scientific domestic and foreign literature, comparative analysis, analysis of secondary data, as well as materials of the first wave of a mass online survey of university teachers in April 2020 about the development of online environment in the context of coronavirus infection, initiated by the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation (N = 33987), allowed the authors to draw conclusions that distance education is not just a technical problem, but a pedagogical challenge. Not only special equipment, software, stable Internet access are needed, but also high-quality tutoring support for the educational process, since communication between a teacher and a student takes place in a different, unusual and non-standard conditions, with different rules, etiquette, plans and forms of work, online tools. Foreign experience of pedagogical support of students also shows that to a greater extent the challenges associated with the transition to mass distance learning are on the psychological and pedagogical plane.
