Abstract:

The article attempts to analyze the features of interethnic relations on the territory of Irkutsk region. It is based on a sociological research which was carried out to identify potential hotbeds of tension in the field of interethnic relations and the role of public authorities in shaping national policy to strengthen the interethnic unity. Two stages composed the sociological research process; each involved different methods: a personal interview method (N = 2000), which geographically covered ten largest municipal alliances in Irkutsk region, and focus interview method (N = 20), interviews were conducted in large regional centers: the city of Nizhneudinsk and the city of Ust-Ilimsk. The problems and questions discussed with the respondents belong to the so-called closed topics, the discussion of which is quite personal for the respondents. This determined the difficulties of the field stage of collecting primary empirical data. Along with the problem of the respondents’ sincerity about inter-ethnic issues, the authors encountered the problem of the territorial coverage of the sample population of respondents that is necessary to ensure its representativeness. During the survey, the respondents’ national identity, their attitude to the problems of interethnic and interreligious relations in the region, their assessment of the activities of the authorities to harmonize interethnic relations were determined; the issues of interethnic tension and conflicts were analyzed. On the basis of these data, the authors made conclusions about the level of tolerance development in the region, the possibility of interethnic and interreligious tensions on the territory of the Irkutsk region and population awareness about the activities of the authorities in this area.
